Please Note: This post discusses dog diarrhea (and vomiting) so, if you do not have an interest in reading content of this sort, please do consider viewing any one of my other posts at Scott Schroeder Says, especially From One Pet Lover To Another: Do You ZooToo? if you are looking mainly for Scott Schroeder’s pet-related articles.

Since approximately 4:20 am PST last Thursday morning, my English Springer Spaniel dogs have been plagued with doggy diarrhea, leaving me vigorously scrubbing the den carpet of my apartment and repeatedly bathing them, all the while simultaneously scratching my head for a solution. After tracing back a few days and considering any diet changes as well as any potential for new foods/drinks that they may have come across, I was unable to derive a set cause of this sickness. The only thing that I could think of was the monthly flea treatment, Comfortis (that I had given them both earlier this month) which stated that diarrhea could be one of the undesired side effects BUT, there were no previous reactions from Comfortis when I had administered it in any of the months before so, again, I was left with no set cause of my dogs’ illness.

Once Monday came and I had to clean my apartment carpet again shortly before 5am PST, I was forced to call the veterinarian and schedule a drop-off for a complete adult dog check-up. The veterinarian advised me that she had been seeing similar cases of diarrhea (and vomiting) with some of the pets that she had been treating and that she thought some sort of “bug” was going around. Not a perfect explanation nor one that can be used to prevent future occurrences but, I have to admit that I am a bit relieved to know that Beaux and Luke are not the only dogs experiencing this burden and hence, are not exhibiting negative side effects from their current diet and/or flea treatment. I was sent home with some medications (Flagyl Metronidazole and Cholacaol II) as well as some Purina canned EN food and, from the looks of it, they do appear to be getting better – not 100% as they are still producing loose stool but, better than before.

Anyone else out there having/had similar doggy dog issues? What actions have you taken?
